What’s Onomatopoeia Mean? – Another Question from My Daughters

Every night my children (ages 4 and 5) ask us all sort of interesting questions. A few of them have to do with things that I have not believed about in a long time. A few of them arent easy to address in a way that they can understand. And a few of them are a little bit of both. That was case one night last week when my five-year-old asked, “whats onomatopoeia suggest?” I did my finest to describe that it is a word like “moo” that is produced from the sound that it makes..

On an associated note, Next Vista for Learning hosts a great video description of onomatopoeia. The video was produced by a high school student for one of Next Vistas many student video development contests.

After dinner and my rather unsuccessful description of onomatopoeia, I turned to YouTube to search for a video that may help my children better comprehend what onomatopoeia is. Thats where I discovered this short and charming music video about onomatopoeia. Ill alert you, the tune is kind of catchy (if youre a five-year-old)..
