What’s Onomatopoeia Mean? – Another Question from My Daughters

After dinner and my rather not successful explanation of onomatopoeia, I turned to YouTube to attempt to discover a video that may help my children better understand what onomatopoeia is. Thats where I found this short and charming video about onomatopoeia. Ill alert you, the tune is sort of catchy (if youre a five-year-old)..

Every night my daughters (ages 4 and 5) ask all of us type of interesting questions. A few of them have to do with things that I have not thought about in a very long time. Some of them arent simple to address in such a way that they can understand. And some of them are a little bit of both. That was case one night recently when my five-year-old asked, “whats onomatopoeia imply?” I did my best to describe that it is a word like “moo” that is developed from the sound that it makes..

On an associated note, Next Vista for Learning hosts a great video description of onomatopoeia. The video was produced by a high school trainee for one of Next Vistas numerous student video production contests.
