US News Map – A Great Way to Explore Newspaper Archives

In this short video I supply a demonstration of how to utilize the U.S. News Map to find historical newspaper articles.

The U.S. News Map is based upon the Chronicling America paper collection hosted by the Library of Congress. When you browse on the U.S. News Map the results of your search will be displayed on an interactive map. Clicking a placemarker the map will take you to a list of short articles from papers in the location around the placemarker. You can then pick a post from the list and read it on the Chronicling America website where you can also download a copy of the short article. The U.S. News Map will let you look for articles released between 1789 and 1964.

Earlier this summertime I shared some
ideas for encouraging trainees to do research study in digital archives. The
U.S. News Map produced by Georgia Tech and the University of Georgia uses another fascinating method to motivate trainees to explore digital archives.
