STEM Educators Demonstrate Innovative Uses of Data-Collection Technology to Win 2022 Vernier/NSTA Technology Awards

BEAVERTON, Oregon, April 8, 2022– Vernier Software Application & & Innovation and the National Science Teaching Association (NSTA) are delighted to announce the winners of the 2022 Vernier/NSTA Innovation Awards. Chosen by a panel of NSTA-appointed specialists, this years winners– one middle school teacher and 2 high school teachers– showed ingenious usages of data-collection technology to engage students in STEM learning.

Each of the winning educators will receive $1,000 in money, $1,500 towards travel costs to go to the NSTA National Conference on Science Education in Houston, and $3,000 in Vernier items.

The 2022 Vernier/NSTA Technology Award winners are listed below.

Classification: Middle School

Eric Sullenberger, Russia Local School, Russia, OH

This grant will allow Sullenberger to provide additional hands-on learning opportunities to trainees in his physical science classes. Through different investigations– including producing topographic maps with GPS sensors, collecting real-time weather information, measuring weather data at different elevations with the help of a drone, and using science to farming– Sullenberger plans to engage trainees in more information collection and analysis so they can better understand and picture abstract principles.

Classification: High School

Olivia Kuper, North Greene High School, Greeneville, TN

Kuper prepares to utilize the probeware acquired through this grant to improve science education in multiple classes at her rural high school, where many trainees have not had access to this kind of technology. She also plans, in part, to carry out the technology throughout Modeling Instruction labs– such as evaluating a lorrys movement with the Constant Velocity Model Paradigm Lab– so students can develop a deeper understanding of clinical content using their own data.

Crystal McDowell, Greenbrier High School, Evans, GA

. McDowell will use this grant to engage her anatomy and physiology students in hands-on data collection. Throughout a multipart examination, trainees will learn more about various body systems, analyze information about their own health and crucial signs using Vernier probeware, and function as doctors by designing a health evaluation for a physical examination.
