Read and Transcribe Walt Whitman’s Notebooks and Diaries

A few years ago the Library of Congress launched a crowd sourcing project called
Crowd. The function of the project is to enlist the assistance of the general public to transcribe thousands of primary source documents that are housed by and have actually been scanned by the Library of Congress. Over the years there have been collections of files from the American Civil War, documents from the American Revolution, governmental documents, documents about suffrage, and files about the integration of Major League Baseball. Presently, the LOC is seeking help transcribing a collection of
Walt Whitmans notes and journals..

Applications for EducationThe LOCs Crowd task is an excellent opportunity for high school trainees and some middle school students to discover Walt Whitman while adding to a national project. All of the collections in Crowd do have timelines and some other resources that help to provide context for the documents that require transcription.
The Smithsonian has a similar crowdsourcing task called Smithsonian Digital Volunteers.

If you see it in other places, it has been used without consent. Sites that steal my (Richard Byrnes) work include CloudComputin and WayBetterSite.

Anybody can participate in the LOCs Crowd project to transcribe files in the Walt Whitman collection of journals and notes. Your selected document will appear on the left side of the screen and a field for composing your transcription appears on the right side of the screen.
