PURPOSE: The following lesson gives kids the chance to reveal the important things that are on their mind and check out concerns they have about their news. The lesson structure is perfect for those days when “the world hands you your curriculum” (@katricequitter) or as a regular, daily/weekly SEL check-in. PREP: Create a space for students to tape-record their news. They can compose in a note pad, on an anchor chart (with or without instructor assistance), or through a digital platform like Google Slides.

DESIGN THE PROCESS: Start by saying, “There are great deals of things happening worldwide right now and there are also things in my news that are on my mind.” Model your thinking as you compose down a couple of products that are in “your news.” These might be as huge as existing events and news headings, or as individual as a family birthday showing up or a journey to the veterinarian with your pet.
