To identify which version of Google Sites youre using merely go into sites.google.com into your internet browsers address bar then look in the bottom-left corner of the screen. If the bottom-left corner of the screen has a “back to Classic Sites” button then youre using the existing version of Google Sites. Heres a little video presentation of those actions..
