Are Your Students Learning Self Care From You?

Dear Educators,
The reports on stress and anxiety in education– for trainees and instructors alike– have prompted me to write you this immediate letter. Historically, teaching has actually constantly been understood for being demanding. From lesson preparation to classroom design, from habits management to developmental feedback, from evaluation criteria to finding out objectives, there is constantly a plate to spin.
For a full year now, weve been responsive to rapidly changing contexts for mentor and knowing– distance, hybrid, asynchronous … and whatever in between. It has been the equivalent of running a marathon at sprint speed … and, well, thats not reasonable.
As committed as we are to reversing our grading, tailoring our curriculum, and producing additional resources to support and extend finding out from home, we are just grinding ourselves to a pulp. How can we construct and repair the proverbial plane while flying it?
Theres a balance between following a pacing guide and being dragged around by it. Theres a sweet spot between depth and breadth of knowing. Theres a juuus riiiight that is neither too hard nor too soft, approximately Goldilocks stated.
What are we modeling for our students by flying at warp speed? Just how much more vital might it be for us to reveal our trainees that wellness is a wanted result and a worthwhile concern? What may our trainees remember five, ten, twenty years from now about us if we make the effort to state “I was exhausted and thats fine” or “I chose to stop due to the fact that it was necessary to have time with my family” or” I had an opportunity to get outside instead of staying at my desk.”
If we fulfilled with students who described working non-stop and seldom pausing to capture their breath, we understand what we d encourage. We d advise them that some things are more crucial and longer lasting than some of the things that consume them. Why is it so hard for us to use ourselves this exact same sensible recommendations?
She reminds me that my students are counting on me to bring them my best self and that means having energy, being rested, and approaching our time together with a good spirit. What students do not deserve this of their teachers?

PS This letter wouldnt be total without some What Ifs. Perhaps one (or all!– geez, Im optimistic) will interrupt you from that slide down the domino effect towards instructor burnout and lock in like a grappling hook to cause time out and provide leverage to begin the climb back up towards balance and health so your trainees can see and experience you as a positive good example for self care.

What if you provided your students a night off from research and, instead, recommended that they utilize the time to assist a buddy?
What if you took a break from private feedback and used the class some holistic observations and a few representative examples?
What if you started class with some mild music and dancing or stretching or vigorous smiling?
What if you took a minute on your own to enjoy an ebook on self- care?
What if you took your laptop computer outside to teach class tomorrow?
What if you provided yourself a pass on some family chore that actually can wait?
What if you welcomed a good friend to be a guest speaker or guest reader or visitor comic so that you and your trainees could just share an experience together?
What if you took a minute to make a note of a few of the ideas that you keep replaying in your head so that your mind can rest?
