A classroom teacher’s view on homework

I do see research as having a role in the educational process and I do not agree with Alfie Kohn (see post), who appears to think homework is worthless, or worse, has an unfavorable effect. While Kohn asserts there is nearly no research study that shows homework to be beneficial, I did not see a convincing amount of difficult information to support doing away with all research.
Yes, the amount of research ought to be based on the students age and grade level. As many Kindergarten-3rd grade teachers are self-contained, it should be fairly simple to offer mathematics research one night, reading or spelling one night, etc to prevent overloading 5 to 8-year-olds. Homework can be a divisive subject in the education community, and we hope you can appreciate this teachers point of view.

LE: What is your position on the problem of research?
I answer as an educator and as the moms and dad of school age children when I address this concern. I do see homework as having a function in the instructional process and I do not agree with Alfie Kohn (see article), who appears to think homework is useless, or worse, has an unfavorable effect. While Kohn asserts there is nearly no research study that shows homework to be helpful, I did not see a convincing quantity of hard information to support getting rid of all homework.

As the majority of Kindergarten-3rd grade teachers are self-contained, it ought to be relatively easy to give math research one night, spelling or reading one night, etc to prevent overwhelming 5 to 8-year-olds. I see homework to extend knowing.
Our book mentions it can take 24 repeatings of an ability for a trainee to reach 80% proficiency. I believe practicing abilities is rewarding. Kohns comparison with tennis does not make sense to me. There are skills in tennis you should practice to enhance. There are fundamental mathematics skills kids should practice to develop a solid foundation prior to carrying on to higher-level math abilities. Kohn explains how students might progress at keeping in mind, but not thinking. I see this as two various things; we need trainees to bear in mind certain realities and then carry on to using those skills as thinkers and issue solvers.
As a parent, it can be tough to squeeze in homework some nights! My own children have actually brought home projects I thought improper or too lengthy for one night. We do the best we can, and if we have concerns or issues, I reach out to the teacher. Knowing some students have little or no support in your home need to be acknowledged by educators. Once again, great instructors make it a point to understand what some house scenarios might resemble and to modify appropriately. When possible, colleagues can interact, as explained in 2 extra course short articles, by developing a learning laboratory or including “Drop-In” times during the school day
