A classroom teacher’s view on homework

I do see homework as having a role in the academic procedure and I do not concur with Alfie Kohn (see post), who appears to believe research is useless, or even worse, has a negative effect. While Kohn asserts there is practically no research that proves research to be useful, I did not see a persuading quantity of tough information to support doing away with all homework.
Yes, the amount of homework need to be based on the students age and grade level. As many Kindergarten-3rd grade instructors are self-contained, it must be relatively basic to offer mathematics homework one night, spelling or checking out one night, and so on to avoid straining 5 to 8-year-olds. Research can be a dissentious subject in the education neighborhood, and we hope you can value this teachers point of view.

When considering research, instructors find it beneficial to communicate their policy with the families of their students. After just recently completing a Learners Edge course, Jennifer Lindsey, a fourth grade teacher from Pennsylvania, showed on her research approach that includes the purposeful roles instructors and families play.

LE: What is your position on the problem of homework?
When I answer this concern, I address as an educator and as the parent of school age children. As most Kindergarten-3rd grade instructors are self-contained, it should be relatively simple to give math homework one night, spelling or reading one night, etc to prevent overloading 5 to 8-year-olds. I see research to extend knowing.
Our book points out it can take 24 repeatings of a skill for a trainee to reach 80% competency. Kohn points out how trainees may become better at remembering, however not thinking. I see this as two different things; we need students to remember specific truths and then move on to using those skills as thinkers and issue solvers.
As a parent, it can be tough to squeeze in homework some nights! My own children have actually brought home assignments I believed improper or too lengthy for one night. We do the very best we can, and if we have concerns or problems, I connect to the teacher. Understanding some trainees have little or no support in your home should be recognized by teachers. Again, good teachers make it a point to know what some house circumstances might resemble and to modify appropriately. When possible, coworkers can collaborate, as explained in two additional course short articles, by establishing a finding out lab or integrating “Drop-In” times during the school day
