A classroom teacher’s view on homework

LE: What is your position on the issue of homework?
When I address this concern, I respond to as a teacher and as the parent of school age kids. I do see homework as having a function in the educational procedure and I do not agree with Alfie Kohn (see post), who appears to think homework is worthless, or worse, has a negative impact. While Kohn asserts there is nearly no research study that shows homework to be advantageous, I did not see a persuading amount of tough data to support eliminating all research.
Yes, the quantity of homework need to be based on the students age and grade level. As many Kindergarten-3rd grade teachers are self-contained, it needs to be fairly simple to give mathematics research one night, spelling or checking out one night, etc to avoid straining 5 to 8-year-olds. I see research to extend knowing.
Our textbook points out it can take 24 repetitions of a skill for a student to reach 80% proficiency. I think practicing abilities is beneficial. Kohns comparison with tennis does not make good sense to me. There are skills in tennis you need to practice to enhance. There are basic math skills children need to practice to construct a solid structure prior to proceeding to higher-level mathematics skills. Kohn explains how students may progress at keeping in mind, but not thinking. I see this as two different things; we require students to bear in mind specific realities and then carry on to utilizing those abilities as thinkers and issue solvers.
As a moms and dad, it can be hard to squeeze in homework some nights! My own children have brought home assignments I believed improper or too prolonged for one night. We do the very best we can, and if we have issues or issues, I connect to the instructor. Understanding some students have little or no assistance at home must be recognized by educators. Again, excellent instructors make it an indicate understand what some house circumstances might be like and to customize accordingly. When possible, colleagues can interact, as described in 2 extra course short articles, by establishing a discovering laboratory or integrating “Drop-In” times throughout the school day

Research can be a dissentious topic in the education community, and we hope you can appreciate this instructors point of view.
