A classroom teacher’s view on homework

I do see research as having a function in the instructional procedure and I do not concur with Alfie Kohn (see short article), who appears to think research is worthless, or worse, has a negative impact. While Kohn asserts there is practically no research study that proves research to be beneficial, I did not see a convincing amount of hard information to support doing away with all research.
Yes, the amount of research need to be based on the students age and grade level. As the majority of Kindergarten-3rd grade instructors are self-contained, it must be relatively basic to offer math homework one night, reading or spelling one night, and so on to prevent overwhelming 5 to 8-year-olds. When believing about research, teachers discover it helpful to communicate their policy with the households of their students. After just recently completing a Learners Edge course, Jennifer Lindsey, a 4th grade teacher from Pennsylvania, assessed her homework approach which includes the purposeful functions instructors and families play.

LE: What is your position on the concern of homework?
When I address this question, I answer as an educator and as the moms and dad of school age children. Yes, the quantity of homework should be based on the trainees age and grade level. As the majority of Kindergarten-3rd grade teachers are self-contained, it should be relatively simple to give mathematics research one night, spelling or reading one night, etc to prevent straining 5 to 8-year-olds. I see research to extend learning.
Our book points out it can take 24 repeatings of an ability for a student to reach 80% proficiency. Kohn points out how trainees may end up being better at remembering, however not thinking. I see this as two various things; we need trainees to remember certain realities and then move on to using those abilities as thinkers and issue solvers.
As a moms and dad, it can be hard to squeeze in homework some nights! We do the best we can, and if we have issues or issues, I reach out to the teacher. Again, excellent instructors make it a point to know what some house circumstances may be like and to modify appropriately.
