A classroom teacher’s view on homework

Research can be a divisive topic in the education neighborhood, and we hope you can value this teachers point of view. How do you interact with families about research?

I do see research as having a function in the instructional procedure and I do not agree with Alfie Kohn (see post), who appears to think research is worthless, or even worse, has an unfavorable effect. While Kohn asserts there is almost no research that shows research to be helpful, I did not see a convincing amount of difficult information to support doing away with all research.

Our book explains it can take 24 repetitions of an ability for a student to reach 80% proficiency. I believe practicing skills is beneficial. Kohns comparison with tennis does not make good sense to me. There are skills in tennis you need to practice to improve. There are basic math abilities kids should practice to construct a solid structure prior to proceeding to higher-level mathematics abilities. Kohn mentions how trainees may progress at keeping in mind, but not believing. I see this as two different things; we need trainees to keep in mind specific facts and after that carry on to utilizing those skills as thinkers and issue solvers.
As a parent, it can be tough to squeeze in homework some nights! We do the finest we can, and if we have problems or concerns, I reach out to the teacher. Once again, good instructors make it a point to understand what some house situations may be like and to customize appropriately.
