A classroom teacher’s view on homework

Homework can be a dissentious subject in the education neighborhood, and we hope you can value this instructors viewpoint. We would like to hear your ideas about research. What is your philosophy? How do you interact with households about homework?

I do see homework as having a role in the academic procedure and I do not concur with Alfie Kohn (see post), who appears to believe research is worthless, or even worse, has an unfavorable effect. While Kohn asserts there is almost no research study that proves homework to be helpful, I did not see a convincing amount of hard data to support doing away with all homework.
Yes, the amount of research need to be based on the trainees age and grade level. As most Kindergarten-3rd grade instructors are self-contained, it needs to be relatively basic to give mathematics research one night, checking out or spelling one night, and so on to prevent overwhelming 5 to 8-year-olds. LE: What is your position on the concern of research?
When I address this concern, I address as a teacher and as the moms and dad of school age kids. I do see research as having a function in the instructional process and I do not agree with Alfie Kohn (see short article), who appears to think research is useless, or worse, has a negative effect. While Kohn asserts there is almost no research that shows research to be advantageous, I did not see a persuading amount of difficult information to support eliminating all homework.

I see homework to extend learning.
Our book mentions it can take 24 repeatings of an ability for a student to reach 80% competency. I think practicing skills is rewarding. Kohns contrast with tennis does not make good sense to me. There are skills in tennis you need to practice to enhance. There are standard math abilities children need to practice to build a solid structure before carrying on to higher-level math abilities. Kohn explains how students might progress at keeping in mind, but not believing. I see this as 2 different things; we need students to bear in mind particular realities and then proceed to using those skills as thinkers and issue solvers.
As a moms and dad, it can be tough to squeeze in research some nights! My own kids have actually brought house projects I believed too prolonged or improper for one night. We do the very best we can, and if we have concerns or issues, I connect to the instructor. Understanding some students have little or no assistance in your home must be recognized by teachers. Again, great instructors make it a point to know what some home situations might resemble and to customize appropriately. When possible, coworkers can interact, as described in two extra course articles, by establishing a learning lab or including “Drop-In” times during the school day

When thinking about research, instructors find it beneficial to interact their policy with the families of their students. After just recently completing a Learners Edge course, Jennifer Lindsey, a 4th grade teacher from Pennsylvania, showed on her research viewpoint that includes the purposeful roles teachers and families play.
