A classroom teacher’s view on homework

When thinking of research, teachers discover it advantageous to interact their policy with the households of their students. After just recently finishing a Learners Edge course, Jennifer Lindsey, a 4th grade instructor from Pennsylvania, reviewed her homework approach that includes the purposeful functions instructors and households play.

I do see homework as having a role in the educational procedure and I do not concur with Alfie Kohn (see post), who appears to believe research is useless, or worse, has an unfavorable impact. While Kohn asserts there is nearly no research study that shows research to be useful, I did not see a convincing amount of tough information to support doing away with all research.
Yes, the amount of research must be based on the trainees age and grade level. As the majority of Kindergarten-3rd grade instructors are self-contained, it should be relatively easy to give math research one night, spelling or reading one night, etc to avoid overwhelming 5 to 8-year-olds. Homework can be a dissentious topic in the education neighborhood, and we hope you can appreciate this teachers point of view.

Homework can be a divisive subject in the education community, and we hope you can value this instructors perspective. We want to hear your thoughts about homework. What is your philosophy? How do you communicate with families about homework?

LE: What is your position on the concern of homework?
When I answer this concern, I respond to as a teacher and as the moms and dad of school age children. I do see homework as having a role in the educational procedure and I do not concur with Alfie Kohn (see short article), who appears to think research is worthless, or worse, has an unfavorable effect. While Kohn asserts there is nearly no research that proves research to be useful, I did not see a persuading quantity of tough information to support eliminating all research.

Our book mentions it can take 24 repetitions of an ability for a student to reach 80% proficiency. I believe practicing skills is beneficial. Kohns comparison with tennis does not make good sense to me. There are abilities in tennis you need to practice to improve. There are basic mathematics skills children need to practice to build a strong foundation before moving on to higher-level mathematics abilities. Kohn points out how trainees might progress at keeping in mind, however not believing. I see this as two different things; we need students to keep in mind particular truths and after that carry on to utilizing those abilities as thinkers and problem solvers.
As a moms and dad, it can be hard to squeeze in research some nights! My own kids have actually brought home tasks I believed too lengthy or improper for one night.
