A classroom teacher’s view on homework

When thinking of homework, teachers find it beneficial to interact their policy with the households of their students. After just recently completing a Learners Edge course, Jennifer Lindsey, a 4th grade instructor from Pennsylvania, assessed her homework philosophy which includes the purposeful roles instructors and families play.

I do see research as having a function in the educational procedure and I do not concur with Alfie Kohn (see short article), who appears to believe research is worthless, or even worse, has an unfavorable impact. While Kohn asserts there is practically no research study that proves research to be advantageous, I did not see a convincing amount of difficult data to support doing away with all research.
Yes, the quantity of homework must be based on the trainees age and grade level. As the majority of Kindergarten-3rd grade teachers are self-contained, it must be fairly basic to provide math homework one night, reading or spelling one night, etc to avoid straining 5 to 8-year-olds. Research can be a dissentious topic in the education community, and we hope you can value this teachers point of view.

LE: What is your position on the problem of homework?
I answer as a teacher and as the parent of school age kids when I address this question. I do see homework as having a function in the academic process and I do not concur with Alfie Kohn (see article), who appears to think homework is worthless, or even worse, has an unfavorable impact. While Kohn asserts there is practically no research that shows homework to be helpful, I did not see a persuading amount of tough data to support eliminating all research.
Yes, the quantity of homework need to be based on the students age and grade level. As many Kindergarten-3rd grade instructors are self-contained, it must be reasonably basic to provide mathematics research one night, reading or spelling one night, etc to avoid overloading 5 to 8-year-olds. I see research to extend learning.
Our book points out it can take 24 repetitions of an ability for a trainee to reach 80% proficiency. Kohn points out how students might become better at remembering, but not believing. I see this as two various things; we need students to remember specific truths and then move on to using those skills as thinkers and issue solvers.
As a moms and dad, it can be difficult to squeeze in research some nights! My own kids have actually brought house tasks I thought inappropriate or too lengthy for one night. We do the finest we can, and if we have problems or concerns, I reach out to the teacher. Knowing some students have little or no support in the house need to be acknowledged by teachers. Once again, good instructors make it a point to know what some home scenarios may resemble and to customize appropriately. When possible, associates can interact, as described in 2 supplemental course posts, by developing a discovering laboratory or incorporating “Drop-In” times throughout the school day
