A classroom teacher’s view on homework

LE: What is your position on the issue of homework?
I address as an educator and as the parent of school age kids when I address this concern. I do see homework as having a function in the academic procedure and I do not agree with Alfie Kohn (see article), who appears to think homework is worthless, or even worse, has a negative effect. While Kohn asserts there is almost no research that shows research to be beneficial, I did not see a convincing quantity of tough data to support getting rid of all research.
Yes, the quantity of research ought to be based on the trainees age and grade level. As the majority of Kindergarten-3rd grade instructors are self-contained, it must be reasonably simple to provide math homework one night, spelling or checking out one night, etc to prevent overloading 5 to 8-year-olds. I see research to extend knowing.
Our textbook mentions it can take 24 repetitions of an ability for a trainee to reach 80% proficiency. I think practicing skills is worthwhile. Kohns contrast with tennis does not make sense to me. There are skills in tennis you need to practice to enhance. There are fundamental math abilities kids should practice to construct a solid foundation before proceeding to higher-level math abilities. Kohn explains how trainees might progress at remembering, but not thinking. I see this as two different things; we need students to keep in mind specific facts and then carry on to utilizing those abilities as thinkers and problem solvers.
As a parent, it can be difficult to squeeze in research some nights! My own kids have actually brought home tasks I thought unsuitable or too prolonged for one night. We do the best we can, and if we have issues or issues, I reach out to the teacher. Knowing some trainees have little or no support in the house should be acknowledged by educators. Again, excellent instructors make it an indicate understand what some home situations may resemble and to modify accordingly. When possible, coworkers can collaborate, as explained in two supplemental course articles, by establishing a finding out laboratory or integrating “Drop-In” times throughout the school day

While Kohn asserts there is almost no research study that proves research to be useful, I did not see a persuading amount of difficult data to support doing away with all research.
Yes, the quantity of homework need to be based on the trainees age and grade level. As many Kindergarten-3rd grade teachers are self-contained, it should be fairly basic to give mathematics research one night, checking out or spelling one night, and so on to avoid overwhelming 5 to 8-year-olds. Homework can be a dissentious topic in the education community, and we hope you can appreciate this teachers point of view.
