A classroom teacher’s view on homework

I do see research as having a function in the instructional procedure and I do not agree with Alfie Kohn (see short article), who appears to think homework is useless, or even worse, has a negative impact. While Kohn asserts there is practically no research study that shows homework to be helpful, I did not see a persuading quantity of hard data to support doing away with all research.
Yes, the amount of research should be based on the trainees age and grade level. As a lot of Kindergarten-3rd grade instructors are self-contained, it needs to be reasonably basic to offer math research one night, spelling or reading one night, etc to prevent overwhelming 5 to 8-year-olds. Homework can be a divisive subject in the education neighborhood, and we hope you can value this instructors point of view.

LE: What is your position on the issue of homework?
When I answer this question, I respond to as a teacher and as the moms and dad of school age children. I do see research as having a role in the academic process and I do not concur with Alfie Kohn (see article), who appears to believe research is worthless, or worse, has an unfavorable impact. Yes, the quantity of homework must be based on the students age and grade level. As many Kindergarten-3rd grade teachers are self-contained, it needs to be reasonably easy to give mathematics homework one night, reading or spelling one night, and so on to prevent straining 5 to 8-year-olds. I see homework to extend learning.
Our textbook points out it can take 24 repeatings of a skill for a trainee to reach 80% proficiency. Kohn points out how students might become much better at keeping in mind, but not thinking. I see this as two various things; we need students to remember specific realities and then move on to using those abilities as thinkers and issue solvers.
As a moms and dad, it can be hard to squeeze in research some nights! My own kids have brought home projects I believed improper or too prolonged for one night. We do the very best we can, and if we have problems or issues, I connect to the instructor. Understanding some trainees have little or no assistance at home must be acknowledged by teachers. Once again, great teachers make it an indicate know what some house scenarios might resemble and to modify appropriately. When possible, colleagues can collaborate, as explained in 2 additional course articles, by developing a discovering laboratory or integrating “Drop-In” times throughout the school day

When thinking about homework, teachers find it advantageous to interact their policy with the households of their trainees.
