A classroom teacher’s view on homework

Homework can be a dissentious topic in the education neighborhood, and we hope you can value this instructors point of view. How do you communicate with households about homework?

When considering homework, teachers find it beneficial to interact their policy with the households of their students. After just recently finishing a Learners Edge course, Jennifer Lindsey, a fourth grade instructor from Pennsylvania, reviewed her research approach that includes the purposeful functions instructors and households play.

LE: What is your position on the concern of homework?
When I address this concern, I address as a teacher and as the moms and dad of school age children. I do see homework as having a function in the educational procedure and I do not agree with Alfie Kohn (see article), who appears to think homework is useless, or even worse, has a negative effect. While Kohn asserts there is almost no research that shows homework to be beneficial, I did not see a persuading quantity of tough information to support doing away with all homework.
Yes, the amount of homework need to be based on the students age and grade level. As a lot of Kindergarten-3rd grade teachers are self-contained, it must be fairly simple to offer math homework one night, spelling or checking out one night, etc to prevent overloading 5 to 8-year-olds. I see homework to extend knowing.
Our textbook mentions it can take 24 repetitions of a skill for a trainee to reach 80% competency. I think practicing abilities is rewarding. Kohns comparison with tennis does not make good sense to me. There are skills in tennis you must practice to improve. There are fundamental mathematics abilities kids need to practice to develop a solid structure before carrying on to higher-level math skills. Kohn mentions how trainees may progress at keeping in mind, but not believing. I see this as 2 various things; we require trainees to remember certain realities and then proceed to utilizing those abilities as thinkers and issue solvers.
As a parent, it can be challenging to squeeze in research some nights! My own kids have brought home assignments I believed improper or too lengthy for one night. We do the very best we can, and if we have problems or concerns, I connect to the teacher. Understanding some trainees have little or no support in the house must be recognized by teachers. Once again, excellent teachers make it an indicate know what some house situations may be like and to modify appropriately. When possible, coworkers can interact, as explained in 2 supplemental course articles, by developing a discovering laboratory or integrating “Drop-In” times during the school day
