A classroom teacher’s view on homework

Research can be a dissentious topic in the education community, and we hope you can value this teachers point of view. How do you interact with households about research?

LE: What is your position on the concern of research?
When I address this concern, I address as an educator and as the parent of school age kids. I do see homework as having a function in the academic procedure and I do not agree with Alfie Kohn (see short article), who appears to believe homework is worthless, or worse, has a negative impact. While Kohn asserts there is nearly no research that proves research to be advantageous, I did not see a persuading quantity of tough data to support doing away with all homework.
Yes, the amount of research need to be based on the students age and grade level. As the majority of Kindergarten-3rd grade teachers are self-contained, it should be fairly simple to provide math research one night, reading or spelling one night, and so on to prevent overloading 5 to 8-year-olds. I see research to extend knowing.
Our textbook points out it can take 24 repetitions of a skill for a student to reach 80% proficiency. Kohn points out how trainees may become better at keeping in mind, but not believing. I see this as 2 various things; we need students to keep in mind specific realities and then move on to utilizing those skills as thinkers and issue solvers.
As a moms and dad, it can be challenging to squeeze in homework some nights! My own kids have brought house tasks I believed inappropriate or too prolonged for one night. We do the finest we can, and if we have issues or issues, I reach out to the instructor. Knowing some trainees have little or no support in your home need to be recognized by teachers. Again, great instructors make it an indicate know what some house circumstances may be like and to customize accordingly.
