A classroom teacher’s view on homework

Homework can be a divisive subject in the education community, and we hope you can appreciate this instructors viewpoint. We would like to hear your ideas about homework. What is your approach? How do you communicate with households about research?

I do see research as having a role in the educational procedure and I do not concur with Alfie Kohn (see post), who appears to believe research is useless, or worse, has a negative impact. While Kohn asserts there is nearly no research study that shows homework to be beneficial, I did not see a persuading quantity of hard information to support doing away with all homework.
Yes, the amount of research need to be based on the students age and grade level. As most Kindergarten-3rd grade instructors are self-contained, it needs to be reasonably basic to provide mathematics homework one night, checking out or spelling one night, etc to avoid overwhelming 5 to 8-year-olds. Research can be a dissentious subject in the education neighborhood, and we hope you can value this instructors point of view.

When thinking about homework, instructors discover it beneficial to interact their policy with the households of their trainees. After recently finishing a Learners Edge course, Jennifer Lindsey, a fourth grade instructor from Pennsylvania, reviewed her homework philosophy that includes the purposeful functions instructors and households play.

I see homework to extend learning.
Our textbook points out it can take 24 repeatings of a skill for a trainee to reach 80% proficiency. Kohn points out how trainees might end up being much better at remembering, but not believing. I see this as 2 different things; we need students to keep in mind particular truths and then move on to utilizing those abilities as thinkers and issue solvers.
As a moms and dad, it can be tough to squeeze in research some nights! My own children have brought house tasks I believed improper or too prolonged for one night. We do the very best we can, and if we have problems or issues, I connect to the instructor. Knowing some students have little or no assistance in the house need to be acknowledged by educators. Once again, great teachers make it an indicate understand what some house situations may be like and to modify appropriately. When possible, associates can collaborate, as described in two extra course articles, by developing a discovering laboratory or incorporating “Drop-In” times throughout the school day
