A classroom teacher’s view on homework

I do see research as having a function in the instructional process and I do not concur with Alfie Kohn (see short article), who appears to believe research is useless, or even worse, has an unfavorable impact. While Kohn asserts there is practically no research study that shows homework to be advantageous, I did not see a convincing amount of difficult data to support doing away with all homework.

Yes, the amount of homework must be based upon the students age and grade level. As many Kindergarten-3rd grade instructors are self-contained, it must be relatively easy to give math research one night, checking out or spelling one night, etc to prevent overloading 5 to 8-year-olds. Trainees must not become bored or frustrated if instructors are innovative with tasks and in communicating the purpose of the task. Those are my goals as a fourth-grade teacher. I see research to extend learning. Would I assign 30 math problems to trainees who I know would battle with them, or to students who have demonstrated their understanding of the skill? No, in those cases, it is my job as the instructor to modify the assignments.
Our book points out it can take 24 repeatings of a skill for a student to reach 80% competency. Kohn points out how trainees might become much better at remembering, however not thinking. I see this as 2 different things; we need trainees to remember particular facts and then move on to using those abilities as thinkers and problem solvers.
As a moms and dad, it can be difficult to squeeze in homework some nights! My own kids have actually brought house tasks I believed too prolonged or inappropriate for one night.
