A classroom teacher’s view on homework

Research can be a divisive subject in the education neighborhood, and we hope you can value this instructors point of view. How do you communicate with families about homework?

LE: What is your position on the concern of homework?
When I answer this concern, I answer as an educator and as the parent of school age kids. I do see research as having a role in the academic process and I do not concur with Alfie Kohn (see post), who appears to believe research is worthless, or worse, has an unfavorable impact. While Kohn asserts there is almost no research that proves homework to be helpful, I did not see a convincing amount of difficult data to support eliminating all research.
Yes, the quantity of research need to be based on the trainees age and grade level. As most Kindergarten-3rd grade instructors are self-contained, it should be fairly simple to offer mathematics homework one night, spelling or reading one night, and so on to avoid overwhelming 5 to 8-year-olds. I see research to extend knowing.
Our book points out it can take 24 repeatings of a skill for a trainee to reach 80% proficiency. Kohn points out how trainees might become much better at keeping in mind, however not thinking. I see this as 2 different things; we require trainees to remember certain realities and then move on to utilizing those abilities as thinkers and issue solvers.
As a parent, it can be tough to squeeze in homework some nights! My own kids have brought house tasks I believed improper or too prolonged for one night. We do the very best we can, and if we have concerns or problems, I reach out to the instructor. Understanding some students have little or no assistance in the house must be acknowledged by educators. Again, excellent instructors make it an indicate know what some home scenarios may resemble and to customize appropriately. When possible, colleagues can work together, as explained in 2 extra course articles, by establishing a learning laboratory or including “Drop-In” times throughout the school day

When thinking about research, instructors discover it advantageous to interact their policy with the households of their trainees. After just recently finishing a Learners Edge course, Jennifer Lindsey, a fourth grade instructor from Pennsylvania, showed on her homework philosophy which includes the purposeful roles instructors and households play.

Yes, the amount of homework need to be based on the students age and grade level. As the majority of Kindergarten-3rd grade teachers are self-contained, it needs to be reasonably easy to provide math research one night, spelling or reading one night, etc to prevent overloading 5 to 8-year-olds. Homework can be a dissentious topic in the education neighborhood, and we hope you can value this instructors point of view.
