A classroom teacher’s view on homework

I do see research as having a function in the academic process and I do not concur with Alfie Kohn (see post), who appears to think homework is useless, or even worse, has a negative impact. While Kohn asserts there is almost no research that shows homework to be advantageous, I did not see a persuading quantity of tough data to support doing away with all research.
Yes, the quantity of homework must be based on the trainees age and grade level. As the majority of Kindergarten-3rd grade teachers are self-contained, it must be relatively basic to provide math homework one night, spelling or reading one night, etc to prevent straining 5 to 8-year-olds. Research can be a divisive topic in the education community, and we hope you can appreciate this instructors point of view.

When considering homework, teachers discover it helpful to interact their policy with the families of their students. After recently completing a Learners Edge course, Jennifer Lindsey, a 4th grade teacher from Pennsylvania, reviewed her homework viewpoint which consists of the purposeful functions teachers and households play.

LE: What is your position on the issue of research?
I respond to as an educator and as the parent of school age children when I address this question. I do see homework as having a function in the educational procedure and I do not concur with Alfie Kohn (see article), who appears to believe research is useless, or even worse, has a negative effect. I see homework to extend knowing.
Our book mentions it can take 24 repeatings of an ability for a student to reach 80% competency. I believe practicing abilities is rewarding. Kohns comparison with tennis does not make good sense to me. There are skills in tennis you should practice to enhance. There are fundamental math abilities kids need to practice to construct a solid structure prior to moving on to higher-level mathematics skills. Kohn explains how students might progress at keeping in mind, but not thinking. I see this as 2 various things; we require students to keep in mind certain realities and then proceed to utilizing those skills as thinkers and problem solvers.
As a parent, it can be tough to squeeze in research some nights! We do the best we can, and if we have problems or concerns, I reach out to the instructor. Once again, great instructors make it a point to understand what some home scenarios might be like and to modify appropriately.
