A classroom teacher’s view on homework

Research can be a dissentious topic in the education neighborhood, and we hope you can appreciate this teachers point of view. We would like to hear your ideas about homework. What is your philosophy? How do you interact with households about homework?

When considering homework, teachers discover it helpful to interact their policy with the families of their students. After just recently finishing a Learners Edge course, Jennifer Lindsey, a 4th grade instructor from Pennsylvania, assessed her homework approach which includes the purposeful functions teachers and families play.

I do see homework as having a function in the instructional procedure and I do not agree with Alfie Kohn (see post), who appears to believe research is worthless, or even worse, has an unfavorable impact. While Kohn asserts there is practically no research study that shows homework to be helpful, I did not see a persuading amount of tough data to support doing away with all research.

I address as a teacher and as the parent of school age children when I address this question. Our textbook explains it can take 24 repeatings of an ability for a trainee to reach 80% competency. I believe practicing abilities is beneficial. Kohns contrast with tennis does not make good sense to me. There are abilities in tennis you need to practice to enhance. There are basic math skills kids should practice to build a solid foundation before carrying on to higher-level mathematics abilities. Kohn mentions how trainees may progress at remembering, but not believing. I see this as two different things; we require students to bear in mind particular facts and after that proceed to using those abilities as thinkers and problem solvers.
As a parent, it can be hard to squeeze in homework some nights! My own children have brought house projects I thought too lengthy or unsuitable for one night. We do the very best we can, and if we have issues or issues, I reach out to the instructor. Understanding some students have little or no support in the house must be recognized by educators. Again, excellent teachers make it a point to know what some house scenarios might be like and to customize appropriately.
