A classroom teacher’s view on homework

Research can be a dissentious topic in the education neighborhood, and we hope you can appreciate this instructors perspective. We want to hear your thoughts about research. What is your approach? How do you communicate with families about research?

When considering homework, teachers discover it advantageous to communicate their policy with the households of their students. After just recently completing a Learners Edge course, Jennifer Lindsey, a fourth grade instructor from Pennsylvania, reviewed her research approach that includes the purposeful roles teachers and families play.

I do see research as having a role in the academic process and I do not concur with Alfie Kohn (see short article), who appears to believe homework is useless, or even worse, has a negative impact. While Kohn asserts there is nearly no research study that proves research to be useful, I did not see a convincing amount of tough data to support doing away with all research.
Yes, the amount of research must be based on the trainees age and grade level. As the majority of Kindergarten-3rd grade instructors are self-contained, it needs to be reasonably easy to give math homework one night, reading or spelling one night, and so on to avoid straining 5 to 8-year-olds. Homework can be a dissentious subject in the education community, and we hope you can appreciate this teachers point of view.

LE: What is your position on the concern of research?
I address as a teacher and as the parent of school age kids when I answer this concern. I do see homework as having a role in the academic process and I do not agree with Alfie Kohn (see short article), who appears to believe homework is useless, or even worse, has a negative impact. While Kohn asserts there is nearly no research that shows homework to be helpful, I did not see a persuading quantity of difficult information to support getting rid of all research.
Yes, the quantity of research need to be based on the trainees age and grade level. As many Kindergarten-3rd grade teachers are self-contained, it must be reasonably basic to give math research one night, spelling or checking out one night, etc to prevent straining 5 to 8-year-olds. I see homework to extend knowing.
Our textbook explains it can take 24 repetitions of an ability for a trainee to reach 80% proficiency. I think practicing skills is worthwhile. Kohns comparison with tennis does not make good sense to me. There are skills in tennis you must practice to enhance. There are standard math skills kids need to practice to develop a strong foundation before carrying on to higher-level mathematics abilities. Kohn mentions how trainees might end up being much better at keeping in mind, but not believing. I see this as 2 various things; we need trainees to keep in mind specific facts and then proceed to utilizing those abilities as thinkers and problem solvers.
As a moms and dad, it can be tough to squeeze in homework some nights! My own kids have brought house projects I believed improper or too lengthy for one night. We do the very best we can, and if we have issues or concerns, I reach out to the instructor. Understanding some trainees have little or no support in your home should be recognized by educators. Once again, excellent instructors make it an indicate know what some house scenarios may be like and to modify accordingly. When possible, associates can collaborate, as explained in 2 additional course short articles, by establishing a learning laboratory or integrating “Drop-In” times throughout the school day
