A classroom teacher’s view on homework

I do see research as having a function in the educational procedure and I do not agree with Alfie Kohn (see post), who appears to think homework is useless, or even worse, has an unfavorable effect. While Kohn asserts there is nearly no research that proves homework to be advantageous, I did not see a persuading amount of hard data to support doing away with all homework.
Yes, the amount of research need to be based on the students age and grade level. As the majority of Kindergarten-3rd grade instructors are self-contained, it needs to be relatively basic to offer math research one night, checking out or spelling one night, and so on to avoid straining 5 to 8-year-olds. Research can be a divisive subject in the education community, and we hope you can value this instructors point of view.

LE: What is your position on the concern of homework?
I respond to as a teacher and as the moms and dad of school age children when I address this concern. As the majority of Kindergarten-3rd grade instructors are self-contained, it must be fairly basic to offer math research one night, spelling or checking out one night, and so on to prevent overwhelming 5 to 8-year-olds. I see homework to extend knowing.
Our textbook mentions it can take 24 repeatings of an ability for a student to reach 80% competency. I believe practicing abilities is worthwhile. Kohns comparison with tennis does not make good sense to me. There are abilities in tennis you should practice to improve. There are standard math skills children need to practice to develop a solid foundation before proceeding to higher-level math abilities. Kohn mentions how students might become much better at remembering, but not thinking. I see this as 2 different things; we require students to keep in mind particular facts and after that proceed to using those skills as thinkers and problem solvers.
As a moms and dad, it can be hard to squeeze in homework some nights! My own children have brought house projects I believed unsuitable or too lengthy for one night. We do the best we can, and if we have problems or concerns, I connect to the instructor. Understanding some trainees have little or no support in your home must be recognized by educators. Once again, excellent instructors make it an indicate understand what some house situations might be like and to customize accordingly. When possible, associates can work together, as described in two supplemental course articles, by developing a discovering lab or including “Drop-In” times during the school day
