A classroom teacher’s view on homework

I do see research as having a role in the instructional procedure and I do not agree with Alfie Kohn (see post), who appears to believe homework is worthless, or even worse, has a negative impact. While Kohn asserts there is almost no research study that shows homework to be beneficial, I did not see a convincing quantity of tough information to support doing away with all homework.
Yes, the quantity of research must be based on the students age and grade level. As many Kindergarten-3rd grade teachers are self-contained, it ought to be fairly simple to give mathematics research one night, spelling or checking out one night, etc to avoid overloading 5 to 8-year-olds. Homework can be a dissentious topic in the education community, and we hope you can appreciate this instructors point of view.

LE: What is your position on the problem of research?
I address as an educator and as the moms and dad of school age kids when I address this concern. I do see homework as having a role in the educational process and I do not agree with Alfie Kohn (see article), who appears to believe homework is useless, or even worse, has a negative impact. While Kohn asserts there is almost no research study that proves research to be advantageous, I did not see a persuading quantity of hard information to support getting rid of all homework.
Yes, the quantity of homework ought to be based on the trainees age and grade level. As the majority of Kindergarten-3rd grade teachers are self-contained, it should be reasonably simple to give math research one night, reading or spelling one night, etc to avoid overwhelming 5 to 8-year-olds. If instructors are imaginative with projects and in interacting the purpose of the task, trainees need to not become bored or disappointed. Those are my objectives as a fourth-grade instructor. I see research to extend learning. Would I designate 30 mathematics issues to students who I understand would have problem with them, or to students who have shown their understanding of the ability? No, in those cases, it is my task as the instructor to customize the projects.
Our textbook points out it can take 24 repeatings of a skill for a student to reach 80% competency. Kohn points out how students might end up being better at keeping in mind, but not believing. I see this as 2 different things; we require students to remember certain facts and then move on to utilizing those abilities as thinkers and problem solvers.
As a moms and dad, it can be tough to squeeze in homework some nights! My own kids have actually brought home assignments I thought too prolonged or inappropriate for one night. We do the very best we can, and if we have issues or issues, I connect to the teacher. Understanding some students have little or no assistance at house should be acknowledged by teachers. Once again, great instructors make it an indicate understand what some house circumstances may be like and to modify accordingly. When possible, colleagues can interact, as described in two extra course short articles, by developing a discovering laboratory or integrating “Drop-In” times throughout the school day
.

When considering homework, instructors discover it useful to interact their policy with the families of their trainees. After just recently finishing a Learners Edge course, Jennifer Lindsey, a fourth grade instructor from Pennsylvania, reviewed her homework philosophy which includes the purposeful roles teachers and families play.
