A classroom teacher’s view on homework

Homework can be a dissentious topic in the education community, and we hope you can value this teachers perspective. We wish to hear your ideas about research. What is your viewpoint? How do you interact with households about homework?

When thinking about homework, teachers discover it beneficial to interact their policy with the families of their trainees. After just recently finishing a Learners Edge course, Jennifer Lindsey, a fourth grade instructor from Pennsylvania, reviewed her homework viewpoint that includes the purposeful roles teachers and households play.

I do see homework as having a role in the instructional procedure and I do not concur with Alfie Kohn (see article), who appears to believe homework is useless, or worse, has an unfavorable impact. While Kohn asserts there is practically no research that proves homework to be helpful, I did not see a persuading amount of hard information to support doing away with all research.

As the majority of Kindergarten-3rd grade instructors are self-contained, it must be fairly easy to provide mathematics research one night, checking out or spelling one night, etc to avoid straining 5 to 8-year-olds. LE: What is your position on the concern of research?
I respond to as an educator and as the moms and dad of school age kids when I answer this question. I do see research as having a role in the educational process and I do not concur with Alfie Kohn (see post), who appears to think homework is worthless, or even worse, has an unfavorable effect. While Kohn asserts there is practically no research study that shows homework to be useful, I did not see a convincing quantity of hard information to support doing away with all research.
Yes, the quantity of research need to be based upon the trainees age and grade level. As most Kindergarten-3rd grade teachers are self-contained, it should be relatively easy to provide math research one night, reading or spelling one night, and so on to avoid overwhelming 5 to 8-year-olds. Students ought to not become frustrated or bored if teachers are creative with assignments and in interacting the function of the assignment. Those are my goals as a fourth-grade instructor. I see homework to extend knowing. Would I designate 30 math issues to students who I understand would have a hard time with them, or to students who have demonstrated their understanding of the ability? No, in those cases, it is my job as the instructor to customize the assignments.
Our textbook points out it can take 24 repetitions of a skill for a trainee to reach 80% proficiency. Kohn points out how students may become better at keeping in mind, however not believing. I see this as 2 various things; we need trainees to keep in mind specific truths and then move on to utilizing those abilities as thinkers and issue solvers.
As a parent, it can be challenging to squeeze in research some nights! My own children have brought home assignments I believed unsuitable or too lengthy for one night. We do the very best we can, and if we have issues or issues, I connect to the teacher. Understanding some trainees have little or no support in your home must be recognized by educators. Once again, excellent instructors make it a point to know what some home scenarios might be like and to modify appropriately. When possible, colleagues can collaborate, as explained in two additional course short articles, by establishing a learning laboratory or including “Drop-In” times throughout the school day
