A classroom teacher’s view on homework

Research can be a dissentious topic in the education neighborhood, and we hope you can value this teachers point of view. How do you interact with households about homework?

When thinking about homework, teachers find it useful to communicate their policy with the households of their students. After just recently completing a Learners Edge course, Jennifer Lindsey, a fourth grade instructor from Pennsylvania, reviewed her research viewpoint which consists of the purposeful roles teachers and families play.

I do see homework as having a function in the educational procedure and I do not concur with Alfie Kohn (see post), who appears to believe research is useless, or worse, has a negative impact. While Kohn asserts there is practically no research study that proves research to be beneficial, I did not see a persuading quantity of tough data to support doing away with all research.

As many Kindergarten-3rd grade teachers are self-contained, it must be fairly basic to offer mathematics research one night, spelling or reading one night, etc to avoid overwhelming 5 to 8-year-olds. LE: What is your position on the problem of research?
I answer as a teacher and as the parent of school age children when I answer this concern. I do see research as having a function in the instructional process and I do not concur with Alfie Kohn (see article), who appears to think homework is worthless, or even worse, has an unfavorable effect. While Kohn asserts there is nearly no research that proves research to be beneficial, I did not see a persuading quantity of difficult information to support eliminating all research.
Yes, the quantity of homework must be based on the students age and grade level. As a lot of Kindergarten-3rd grade instructors are self-contained, it needs to be reasonably simple to provide math research one night, reading or spelling one night, etc to prevent straining 5 to 8-year-olds. I see research to extend learning.
Our book points out it can take 24 repetitions of a skill for a trainee to reach 80% competency. Kohn points out how students might end up being much better at keeping in mind, however not believing. I see this as two different things; we need students to keep in mind particular facts and then move on to using those skills as thinkers and problem solvers.
As a moms and dad, it can be difficult to squeeze in research some nights! My own children have brought home tasks I believed too prolonged or inappropriate for one night.
