A classroom teacher’s view on homework

I do see homework as having a function in the educational process and I do not concur with Alfie Kohn (see short article), who appears to think homework is worthless, or even worse, has a negative impact. While Kohn asserts there is nearly no research that proves homework to be beneficial, I did not see a persuading amount of tough data to support doing away with all homework.
Yes, the quantity of research should be based on the students age and grade level. As most Kindergarten-3rd grade instructors are self-contained, it should be fairly simple to offer math homework one night, spelling or checking out one night, etc to avoid overwhelming 5 to 8-year-olds. Research can be a dissentious subject in the education community, and we hope you can appreciate this teachers point of view.

When considering homework, instructors discover it beneficial to interact their policy with the households of their students. After recently finishing a Learners Edge course, Jennifer Lindsey, a 4th grade teacher from Pennsylvania, reviewed her homework philosophy that includes the purposeful roles instructors and households play.

LE: What is your position on the concern of research?
I respond to as a teacher and as the parent of school age children when I answer this concern. Our book mentions it can take 24 repetitions of a skill for a trainee to reach 80% competency. I think practicing skills is rewarding. Kohns comparison with tennis does not make good sense to me. There are abilities in tennis you must practice to improve. There are standard mathematics abilities children must practice to develop a strong foundation before proceeding to higher-level mathematics skills. Kohn explains how students might end up being much better at remembering, however not thinking. I see this as two various things; we require trainees to bear in mind particular truths and then proceed to using those skills as thinkers and issue solvers.
As a parent, it can be hard to squeeze in homework some nights! My own children have brought house tasks I thought too lengthy or unsuitable for one night.
